Semana Santa Procession Thrones

Each year hundreds of thousands of people gather around Spain in their local communities to celebrate Semana Santa. Semana Santa is Spanish for Holy Week. Spain is known for its Semana Santa traditions. In 2018, I had the opportunity to attend one of these processions in Cervantes Plaza located in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain. Each procession consists of ornately designed "tronos" (thrones) or “pasos” (floats) that carry statues of Jesus, Mother Mary, other saints, or depict different scenes from the Gospels. Many of these tronos/pasos are considered pieces of art that Catholic Brotherhoods owned and taken care of for hundreds of years.
